DAR ES SALAAM

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest City, located on the glittering East coast of Africa and a bustling and colourful mecca of shops, historical attractions, beaches and food.

A visit would be incomplete without exploring the vibrant Kariakoo Market where you can put your bargaining skills to the test. A stunning fabric kanga souvenir is a must. Fish lovers should get up early and visit the Dar Fish Market and maybe head home with a few bags of prawns and crabs to cook at your camp.

On a more historical note, the Askari Monument right in the centre of Dar is a reminder of the soldiers that fought during WW1 as part of the Carrier Corps.

Those wanting to experience the authentic side of Tanzania, a visit to the Village Museum should be fun. Here you will learn about the country’s tribes and see the Tanzanian traditional huts. You can also watch festive traditional dances and drum performances

Vibrant Mandazi Road is home to a myriad of bars and cafes and the ideal spot to mix with locals and enjoy some roast nyama choma (grilled meat) or a local beer.  For those more into nature, Pugu Hills, 25kms from the centre of Dar, is ideal for hiking, bird watching and its famous bat-caves.

Beach lovers will enjoy Coco Beach on the weekends – delicious street food, parties and concerts abound.  It is not the ideal swimming beach so head out to Bongoyo Island as a day trip.  It is a marine reserve and the warm Indian Ocean is home to plenty to colourful sea life, so a snorkelling excursion should definitely be on the cards.
