11 Day Cape to Namibia Safari

Day 1

Cape town – Western Cape

Our overland desert safari starts in the bustling city of Cape Town. One of the most picturesque cities in the world, overlooked by Table Mountain and bordered by two oceans. Before leaving the city we explore one of Cape Town’s intriguing townships, meeting the local people and community projects. From Cape Town we head North West through the Western Cape and finally make our camp near the beautiful Cederberg Mountain range. Once camp is set up there is an opportunity to sample some wine from the local wine farms.

Day 2

Western Cape – Orange (Gariep) River

Carrying on up North, the landscape starts to get drier and rockier as we make our way toward Namibia. Tonight we will camp on the South African side of the Orange river, also known as the Gariep River. There are hikes to a local view point and an optional canoe safari available to do this afternoon or early the next morning. The Orange River is safe for swimming.

Day 3

Orange (Gariep) River – Fish River Canyon, Namibia

This morning we have time to relax, swim, hike or do the optional canoe safari before heading to the Namibian border. Once we cross the border we make our way to the great Fish River Canyon, stretching 160km long and 500 meters wide it is one of the natural wonders of Africa and the second biggest canyon in the world. There are plenty of photo opportunities especially at the canyons sharp river bend infamously known as Hells Corner.

Day 4

Fish River Canyon – Sesriem Area

Heading further North, we make our we to the Sesriem area which is the gate way into the Namib Naukluft National Park. This is where we will experience some of the world’s highest sand dunes in one of its oldest deserts. Naukluft National Park is the second largest game park in Africa Incorporating part of the Namib Desert with the Naukluft Mountain Range it spans an area of 50 000 square kilometres. This is where we set up camp under the beautiful and starry Namibian sky.

Day 5

Namib Naukluft National Park – Solitaire

We make our way into the park this morning to trek to the top of the famous Dune 45. After breakfast we make our way deeper into the park for a nature walk to the Dead Vlei to have a real look at Namibia’s untouched Natural environment. Make sure to bring your cameras as the shifting colours of the desert as the sun climbs through the midmorning is sure to bring some great photographic opportunities. Leaving the dunes, we head off to the smaller Sesriem Canyon with its multiple layers of rocks and pebbles giving insight into what lies below the mountains of sand. Finally, we make our way tow Namibia’s smallest town aptly named Solitaire.

Day 6

Solitaire – Swakopmund

Departing Solitaire, we head across the Tropic of Capricorn towards the Atlantic coast town of Swakopmund where we will call home for the next two days. A bit of civilisation and the fresh sea air makes for a refreshing change, with many exciting activities and places to explore. Activities like skydiving, sandboarding and quad biking are available for the adventurous or for the more relaxed the town offers shopping, restaurants, art galleries, or an aquarium.

*Please note that for practical reasons, included meals in Swakopmund will only be breakfasts. This allows you to do activities as you wish (some include lunch) and not have to return to for specific meal times. There are plenty of cafes and bakeries around with a good selection of meals. Budget for around R50-R100 per meal.

Day 7

Swakopmund

Today is free for you to enjoy all this lovely seaside town has to offer. A walk along the promenade or through the town admiring the German architecture or more of the many optional activities.

Optional Activity:  Sandboarding, Quad Biking, Skydiving, Deep sea fishing, scenic flights, Swakopmund Township Tour

Day 8

Swakopmund – Spitzkoppe

Heading inland, we say goodbye to the coast and make our way to the beautiful Damaraland region to explore Spitzkoppe where we will come across ancient bushman painting still visible on the rock formations. The giant boulder like rock formations offer mazing viewpoints of the area and the ever changing colour of the rock due to the moving sun. Our camp is owned and maintained by the local community and lies at the base of the mountain. All proceeds from us go directly back into the community.

Day 9

Spitzkoppe – Etosha

Today we make our way to the vast reserve of Etosha national Park spanning around 20000 square kilometres and surrounding a central salt pan. Two nights are spent here and we try camp close to the flood lit watering holes for the best chance to see game such as lions, elephant, giraffes, zebra and hyenas. On arrival in the afternoon we will do a short game drive through the park.

Day 10

Etosha National Park

A full day of game driving take us through the park and past the vast salt pan. Exploring for game such as elephant, hyena, zebra and numerous grazing animals, as well as a wide variety of bird species. After the game drive we return to our camp or head to the next camp to enjoy our final evening watching the animals in their natural habitat.

Day 11

Etosha – Windhoek

Finally, driving South, we head to Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek. A small capital by global standards consisting of only 200 000 people. Direct translation of Windhoek is windy corner. Our tour ends today upon arrival in Windhoek.
