South Africa’s very own National Women’s Day takes place on the 9 of August (with the whole of August celebrating Women’s Month) and the day commemorates pioneering women in the apartheid struggle who marched on parliament to protest the pass laws of the era. Today the public holiday is marked to celebrate all things woman, so enjoy the free time and the joys of being a woman (or having them in your life!).
Here are a few of the fun events happening in Cape Town this Women’s Day:
Durbanville Hills Trail Run – Durbanville Hills Wine Estate
Start your day off right with a 6.75km trail run organized by TrailFun in the scenic Durbanville Hills wine estate. Food and coffee will be on sale for an easy, relaxed atmosphere with no timing and no medals to fight for.

All-Female Comedy Night – Cape Town Comedy Club
Some of the country’s finest in comedy including Mel Jones and Shimmy Isaacs take the stage at the V&A Watrfront – ladies get a free cocktail on arrival on Wednesday night. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Floss & Gloss – Harrington’s
Harrington’s cocktail lounge hosts a special afternoon of treats for ladies including complimentary candy floss, bubbly and hair and make-up touch-ups by scar. Gents are welcome to join after 7pm to listen to some jams by DJ Tamara Chetty and others, enjoy some tapas and party into the morning.

Exhibition: We Cannot Be Silent – Castle of Good Hope
This exhibition will highlight issues of women’s safety through various media such as poetry, film, music and visual art by various local artists. In honour of girls and women who have been raped and murdered in South Africa, the exhibition opens on Women’s Day and will run through until 24 September
