I am a bit bitter because as one of the owners of Ashanti happens to be my big sister, I can’t win this 3 week odyssey, which includes Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. To rub salt in my exclusion from entering this competition, the winner will get to see some of my some of bucket list items: the Okavango Delta, the sand dunes in Sossusvlei (give up the smokes before you climb these), an overnight safari at Chobe National Park, and game watching at Etosha national park. Happy Dance!! There is even stuff I have not thought about which the winner could do if they wish; white river rafting the Zambezi, quad biking in the Namibian desert. And then there is the beasties that the winner will see! There is nothing like seeing a Cheetah in a tree, and elephant flapping his ears at you or hyena having an early morning stroll. I am turning slightly green here.

But wait there is more! You get to play with Sharks – relax you are in a cage. And my all time favourite a wine tour of some of the BEST WINES IN THE WORLD. (It is well documented by me that the best wines in the world come either from South Africa or South Australia. Strangely both lands my ancestors settled in, maybe this is why I should drink more wine?) Then you can go dip your tootsies in 2 oceans at once at Cape Point. And then you have a bar tab for Ashanit. Boy are you going to popular !! It is well known, that the other occupants of the bar in Ashanti Gardens, get much more attractive the more beer/wine/cider you drink. Not only is Ashanti’s Kumasi bar like the bar at the UN with every nationality coming through but it has a great view of my favourite mountain.

It’s amazing. The three Ashanti Lodge and Backpackers are situated in idyllic parts of my adored Cape Town. We get folks from all over the world. They come in telling their tales of Timbuktu, sand dunes and lions. (True story!) All the time regardless of the season. It gives us a great vibe. It brings a smile to your dial when you see folks having fun, enjoying themselves, and still able to chill by the pool.

Ashanti Gardens was one of the first backpackers in town, established over 20 years ago. The owners Lisa and Craig went joling around the world with swag on their backs, came home and went hmm.. what do we know? How to travel cheap but well! The rest is history.
Nowadays there are two Ashantis; The Gardens and The Guest House. A recent refurbishment by a local Cape Town interior designer has meant that all our Ashantis are comfortable and welcoming. And you know what ? Our joints are always clean. No having to wear thongs in the shower at Ashanti. No strange moulds in the Ashanti kitchens!!
