No matter what the weather is like there are always fun things to do in Cape Town. Here are some of Ashanti’s favorites.
#1 WINE TASTING
Do you know those days when the weather is – cautiously speaking – shit and you have to drink it better because nothing else works? Well, at least do it with style in one of the countless wineries around Cape Town. You can either do a wine tasting tour on your own (don’t drink and drive though!) or book the full day wine tour at Ashanti Travel for a day of wine tasting through the winelands of Stellenbosch.
#2 HIKING IN CAPE TOWN
If it’s not raining there isn’t any better time to do a Table Mountain hike or walk through one of the many nature reserves located in and around Cape Town then winter. You won’t sweat as much as in summer, paths aren’t that crowded and nature is even more beautiful as it profits from the rainy season.
#3 CAPE POINT WHALE WATCHING
South Africa is known as one of the best country for land- and sea-based whale watching all around the world. Especially in Cape Point whale watching spots are all over the place and winter is the best time to see them.
#4 ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS IN CAPE TOWN
First Thursday is the day of the month where all the art galleries and museums in Cape Town are busy. But any day of the year it’s worth checking them out.
There are such great ones as the Springbok Experience (rugby museum), the Iziko South African Museum, the District Six Museum or the Iziko South African National Gallery (just to name a few of them).
#5 TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM
The Two Oceans Aquarium is a great way to improve your knowledge and have a lot of fun at the same time. There you can find a wide range of exotic animals such as turtles, sharks, huge crabs or penguins. The best what Indian and Atlantic Ocean have to offer. On top of that you can even dive in there. How cool is that?
#6 THE LABIA (CINEMA)
As it says on their website “The Labia Theatre is the oldest independent art-repertory cinema in South Africa” and it’s just around the corner of Ashanti Lodge in Gardens. So if you ever want to enjoy a nice movie in a good atmosphere for a low price it’s definitely worth checking it out!
#7 INDOOR MARKETS
There are many great markets in Cape Town. Some of them happen to be indoor markets (e.g. The City Bowl Market or the Bay Harbour Market) which makes them independent of weather conditions. Beside hunting for the newest food trends and souvenirs some of them are offering an entertainment program with live music as well.
#8 WARM UP AT EASTERN FOOD BAZAAR
Sometimes you can’t avoid going out in the cold so how do you warm up again? Well, if you’re in the city centre of Cape Town and you’re by any chance hungry as well- try Eastern Food Bazar and raise your body temperature with a spicy curry. It’s also a wise suggestion for those of you who are travelling Cape Town on a budget since meals start from as little as R20.
#9 LONG STREET TURKISH BATH
If the curry didn’t have you warmed up you should go to the Longstreet Turkish Bath which includes among other things a sauna and a heated pool. Perfect for winter!
#10 WINTER AKTION @ ASHANTI
In Kumasi Café it’s even more busy during winter. Every Tuesday we’re running a pool competition and usually every Sunday we organize a movie night. There are additional events happening at Ashanti. To be up to date check out our Facebook page.
We hope “Ashanti’s top 10 things to do in Cape Town during winter” prepared you well for the cold season in the Mother City. Is there anything else we should add to our list?
