Day one includes a visit to the Apartheid Museum before you check into your accommodation in Soweto and end off the day than with a traditional dinner in an outdoor environment.  Day 2 sees us exploring Soweto by bicycle and visiting many historical sites before heading to a local market to buy some fresh produce for your African Cooking lessons this evening. Day 3 sees us heading out to the Cradle of Mankind, considered to be where all humankind originates from and visit caves where skulls of early day man were found. After this we head back t Joburg for the night. The next morning we depart on a walking tour of the city and all it has to offer.

4 Day Soweto And Joburg Tour

Day 1

Pick up from Johannesburg OR Tambo airport. En route to Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers, you will visit the Apartheid Museum for a first hand, introduction to the rise and fall of Apartheid. The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own. Check into your Dorm at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers. Lunch will be a true taste of Soweto served in our outdoor restaurant. Afternoon visit a youth art centre which facilitates all forms of the arts including poetry, rap,dance and music Interact with young Sowetens and learn about their lives in the “kasi”. Experience a traditional “kasi” dinner at our outdoor restaurant and settle into life in Soweto.

Day 2

After breakfast, take a two-hour cycle tour of Soweto that will take you to see some of the, most interesting historical sites in the township. Some of the highlights include a workers’ hostel, Meadowlands, the site of the 1976 student uprising, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Nelson Mandela’s former home and a local pub called a “shebeen”. You will end it with a local lunch called a “Kota” (a Soweto traditional burger) and some traditional beer. After lunch you will visit the historical Kliptown home of the freedom charter the bedrock of our constitution signed here in 1956. Then on to the local market where you can buy some fresh produce to take back to Lebo’s for your African cooking lesson with our chef. Spend the evening enjoying your home cooked meal whilst listening to the vibrant sounds of Africa.

Day 3

After breakfast, travel to the Cradle of Mankind. One of the eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and the only one in Gauteng. It is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated, just over an hour outside Johannesburg, nestled in the Magaliesberg Mountains recently declared a World Biosphere Reserve. The Magaliesberg is almost 100 times older than Mount Everest and half the age of the earth, a unique treasure for us in this part of Africa. Visit the Sterkfontein caves where the 2.5 million year old skulls of early day man were discovered along with other significant findings of human evolution. The visitors centre at Maropeng close by, offers a peep into the history of life on earth. The beginning of the world, the path to humanity and where we are today. You can grab some lunch at the various restaurants on site.

After lunch
Heading back into Johanesburg city, to the Maboneng Precinct. Maboneng, a Sotho word meaning “place of light”, is a fitting name for a district that has fast become a centre of creative energy for Johannesburg’s urban artists. With a mix of art galleries, retail and studio space on offer. The precinct draws the inner-city public, as well as the chic, art-going crowd. Check into your dorm at Curiocity Backpackers just in time for a Sundowner on the roof. Dine at any of 20 different eateries in the area.

Day 4

After breakfast
Your Walking tour of the city starts off with a panoramic view of the city from the tallest building in Africa. Explore the mining district. View the grand architecture of the 12 decades of the city of gold. Street art is abundant and really inspiring. Ending with a scrumptious Pan African lunch in the Ethiopian quarters of the city. Transfer to Airport
