NAIROBI

The bustling capital city of Kenya, Nairobi, is often the starting point for most overland adventure safaris.  This is not to say that it does not have its own attractions!

Nairobi is the only city in the whole world to boast a nature reserve right in the city!  The Nairobi National Park is home to not only over 400 bird species, but also rare black rhinos, towering giraffes and even lions. A highlight is the Safari Walk, an on-foot experience offered amongst the wildlife in the park.

Within the Park, is the David Sheldrick Trust. Serving as an anti-poaching warden for many years, the trust he established was instrumental in raising orphaned elephants and black rhinos. The viewing platforms are perfect for watching the little orphans frolic in their new homes before being re-introduced where possible, back into nature.

The Giraffe Centre is home to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and a kiss from one is possible from a viewing platform.  Here you can not only observe, but also feed these towering giants of nature. Enjoy self-guided forest walk through the adjoining Gogo River Bird Sanctuary.

Shopping malls abound in Nairobi so shopaholics and souvenir hunters will be spoilt for choice – both local and imported goods.  Nightlife is prolific in the largest city in Kenya and a trip down the Westlands “Electric Avenue” will be an evening’s highlight.  Gastronomes are catered for not only with excellent top class restaurants but also sidewalk cafes boasting local delicacies. And a fun place to cool down is at the world largest ice-rink in Africa.

Ashanti Travel Online can assist with planning your trip to this lively metropolis as well as any other Kenya budget safaris that you wish exploring while visiting this magnificent country.
