Namibia Sossusvlei

SOSSUSVLEI

Deep in the southern part of the Namib Desert surrounded by towering red sand dunes, lie the salt and clay pans of Sossusvlei. Situated in the Namib Naukluft National Park, the largest conservation area in Africa, it is a must-see for all tourists wanting to partake in a Namibia tour and experience views like no other.

Hosting some of the largest dunes in the world – some reaching almost 400 metres, Sossusvlei is a popular destination for travellers wanting to take a walk on the wild side and experience sandboarding in its ultimate form. Other activities include 4X4 dune rides, dessert hikes, nature walks, helicopter tours and hot air balloon trips.

The wildlife is also decent, hosting tough desert animals that can brave intense temperatures of over 45 degrees Celsius during the days to below freezing during night time.  A variety of animals – from snakes, to ostriches, to gemsbok and springbok are often sighted during the days while nocturnal mammals such as porcupines, jackals, Bat Eared and Cape Foxes can be viewed at night.

Other attractions near Sossusvlei include Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45, Hiddenvlei, Big Daddy and Deadvlei.   Deadvlei is a clay pan which is a photographers dream – stark contrasts between the pitch black camel-thorn trees, red dunes and white pans create powerful images.  The trees are over 900 years old and have remarkably not decomposed due to the dry climate.

Also look out for the petrified dunes – ancient dunes that are approximately 1 billion years old and have solidified into rock.
