Namibia Swakopmund

SWAKOPMUND

West of the capital of Namibia, Windhoek, lies Swakopmund – a seaside holiday town rich in culture and post German colonial charm with activities for the whole family. Its soft sandy beaches along the ferocious Atlantic Ocean, with a backdrop of massive dunes, makes this picture perfect area a place worth visiting.

The mild climate, friendly locals, vibrant restaurants, festive nightlife, seaside promenade and adventure tours ensure that any sort of traveller will have a great experience whilst visiting this unique town. Activities in this region include exceptional outdoor experiences such as whale watching, dolphin cruises, surfing, fishing trips, horse riding, quad biking, skydiving, dune tours and paragliding. So if you’re keen for adventure trip then Swakop, as it is commonly referred to by locals, will be a highlight for your Namibia tour.

Much of the architecture in Swakopmund is of German influence. This is due to German colonists travelling along the West Coast of Southern Africa during the late 19th century and turning this region into their main port for that area. Many restaurants and bars have German style beers, cuisine and traditions which is quite an experience for those visiting this truly incomparable town.

To achieve a better understanding of the indigenous Herero people who originated in Swakopmund, a township tour would be highly recommended. The Mondesa township is a popular one to visit as has very low crime rates, friendly residents and activities such as tasting traditional home brewed beers and delicious foods at nearby shebeens. The tour also explains the history behind the township, how it was founded in the sixties as a close residency for local workers who worked near Swakop at the time.
