Truly the most majestic and largest mountain range in South Africa is The Drakensberg. Its height reaches almost 3500 metres and spreads from the south eastern part of the country through Lesotho and into the Northern area of Mpumalanga.
It is home to an array of wildlife – from over 250 different bird species, mammals such as eland, baboons and buck to the less commonly found white rhinos and wildebeest. Reptiles abound, like tree and rain frogs and a large variety of fish that live in the many rivers that flow through this extraordinary mountain range. This area has the highest concentration of san bushman rock art in South Africa and can be viewed in isolated caves while enjoying a stunning hike or in the easily accessible Bushmans’ Cave museum in the Giants Castle Reserve where paintings are dated up to 800 years old.
