South Africa - Drakensberg

DRAKENSBERG

Truly the most majestic and largest mountain range in South Africa is The Drakensberg. Its height reaches almost 3500 metres and spreads from the south eastern part of the country through Lesotho and into the Northern area of Mpumalanga.

It is home to an array of wildlife – from over 250 different bird species, mammals such as eland, baboons and buck to the less commonly found white rhinos and wildebeest. Reptiles abound, like tree and rain frogs and a large variety of fish that live in the many rivers that flow through this extraordinary mountain range. The vegetation is also something to boast about and has many beautiful forests and grasslands within the area. The picturesque views and scenic hikes make this spot ideal for someone wanting a little less of the city life and more time in nature.

Also known as the Dragon Mountains, Drakensberg activities include outdoors adventures such as mountain biking on the many trails this area has to offer, white river rafting on the Tugela River, zip lining amongst ancient trees in spectacular forests, canoeing on one of the many lakes as well as quad biking or horse-back riding at the foot of the stunning mountain ranges.

Drakensberg is a hikers’ paradise and has trails all over the region. A hike to Tugela Falls is a must for nature enthusiasts – the second largest waterfall in Africa and is definitely a sight worth experiencing.  Sani Pass is a remarkable pass through the Drakensberg that also has many hiking and biking trails to explore.

If you would like to venture to the more cultural side of the Drakensberg, then the ancient Bushman Rock Art is a must see. This area has the highest concentration of san bushman rock art in South Africa and can be viewed in isolated caves while enjoying a stunning hike or in the easily accessible Bushmans’ Cave museum in the Giants Castle Reserve where paintings are dated up to 800 years old.

Whether relaxing near a tranquil lake with a glass of wine while absorbing the breath-taking views of this incredible area or exploring the mountain trails and impressive wildlife on display is more your idea of a perfect getaway, the Drakensberg has it all. More and more animals become endangered due to poaching, loss of habitat, road-kill, starvation and other dangers. Most and if not all factors, are caused by humans and we are most likely the ones who can save these animals. Especially because Africa has such a rich and diverse wildlife which makes it is of high importance to preserve this. Some you can spot easily on a safari or on the beach and it doesn’t seem like they are endangered but the rapid decrease in numbers tell otherwise. That’s why, we have created a blog to give more attention to [...]

September 5th, 2019|Categories: Cape Town, Day Tours, News, South Africa|0 Comments

Once again, I (Guido Swarts) have been lucky to be sent on a tour with Ashanti Travel. This time I went on a one-of-a-kind tour to Cape Point. This tour is unique because a part of the trip is on E-bikes. Which is a whole different experience when compared to viewing the road from a car. The tour goes from Cape Town to Hout Bay for an optional cruise to Seal Island, from there you drive to Simons Town along the scenic Chapmans Peak Drive. To see wild African penguins waddling on Boulders Beach. Afterwards, you hop on an [...]

Review: Whale and Wine Tour

September 5th, 2019|Categories: Cape Town, Day Tours, News, South Africa|0 Comments

The Whale and Wine Day tour is a full day of not only wine tasting. But, cider, craft beer, gin, and local foods as well. To make thing even better there was some whale-watching at Hermanus included as well. I am no expert in wine, and before this tour, I never gave it a chance. But it was a fantastic and educative day for me. The route was planned perfectly.  I never had the feeling that we were driving for a long time. We stopped to have different tastings on the way to Hermanus. Every stop was diverse but [...]
