JOHANNESBURG
This is the gateway town for most of our Southern and East African overland tours. Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and began as a gold mining settlement over 150 years ago, hence its local name of Egoli (place of gold). Locals now tend to call this area “Jozi” for short and it is a bustling metropolis filled with diversity and culture and home to the country’s financial district.
When exploring Johannesburg there are many museums, art galleries, theatres and shows on offer. You can also tread in the footsteps of our country’s activists and visit one of the largest suburbs, Soweto, to experience a touch of authentic South Africa and visit the Nelson Mandela National Museum in the vibrant Vilakazi Street.
Nightlife is also something that Jozi likes to boast – from local bars, side street shebeens and the trendiest clubs, it really is a place to explore if you are a city socialite. The shopping centres are also impressive, so if you’re looking to get the latest high-end brands for a bargain or authentic South African goods, then visit one of the many malls within the city. The theme park Gold Reef City is also a great adventure for families or individuals looking for some rollercoaster fun.
