MLILWANE NATIONAL PARK
The Kingdom of Swaziland is a small but lush country bordered by South Africa and Mozambique and offers some amazing overland travel wildlife experiences in its national parks.
The Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, meaning ‘little fire” in Swazi and named after the many lightning strikes on the nearby Mlilwane Hill, offers visitors a wide variety of wildlife and nature based experiences. Formerly a mining and farming area, it is the oldest protected area in Swaziland and expands into the Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heavens).
The northern region of the Mlilwane Park stretches up to the towering granite Nyonyane Mountain but it is the southern area which is most explored by visitors and offers all the wildlife viewing.
There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen, including impala, warthog, hippo, blue wildebeest, zebra and if you are lucky the elusive Leopard might make an appearance. Birding enthusiasts will also have plenty to view.
Explore the traditional Swazi way of life by visiting the neighbouring lady Chief’s Village and her homestead ‘Umphakatsi’. You will be asked to put on a traditional Swazi cloth wrap and encouraged to try your hand at local activities such as plaiting grass and grinding maize. You can even join in some traditional dancing and singing or try your hand at learning a few Swazi phrases.
