Tanzania Arusha

ARUSHA

A more dramatic location for an African city is hard to find – nestled at the foot of volcanic Mount Meru, lies the Tanzanian city of Arusha.  Only 100 kilometres away towers the majestic Mount Killamanjaro and to the west of the city is the world famous Serengeti National Park home to wildlife and the famous wildebeest migration.  So truly a gateway city for visitors to this spectacular area.

Arusha is not a modern city but you will absolutely feel the spirit of Africa here!   Central and Kilombero Market as well as those in Sokione Road and Bondeni Street are ideal for shopping for souvenirs such as spectacular carvings, Masai beadwork and colourful kikoys. Worth a visit is Shanga Centre where the disabled of Arusha create the most beautiful clothes, glassworks, jewellery and beadwork.

The stunning blue-violet Tanzanite gemstone is only mined in northern Tanzania so a visit to the Tanzanite Experience in Arusha is a must if you want to know more of the history of this rare gemstone or buy certified gems and jewellery.

Activities in Arusha include visiting the nearby Arusha National Park which is perfect for a full or half day safari excursion, as it is Tanzania’s smallest National Park.  It vistas and spectacular scenery make it worth the trip. Those with strong legs can arrange to hike up volcanic Mount Meru but this is definitely not for the faint-hearted.  Leisurely canoeing options are on offer as are some more challenging hikes.

Surrounded by a forest and an impressive 3.6km wide, the stunning Ngurdoto Crater is now home to a 100m deep swamp – a visit to this exquisite location will complete your overland travel excursion.
